Chapter 31

On the roof, Luc checked his watch. Fifteen minutes since his targets began eating. The poison worked extremely fast. Good things seemed to be happening. Jehovah was at last helping instead of testing them.

No use putting the earphone back in his ear—the music continued to blast. No one appeared to be moving now. He had seen vague thrashing.

Certain that corpses would be found on the apartment floor, Luc rose to a semi-crouch, left his stool, and duck-walked to the fire escape. As he descended, he called Hull and Arp on his cellphone to determine if they’d seen anything amiss from their vantage points.

A minute later, Luc joined Hull in the dark passageway between the two buildings across from Yesuph’s. From here they could see the lit stairwell and part of the front section of each floor’s hallway, except they couldn’t see into Yesuph’s suite. Hauser’s living room light still burned, but no activity there drew their attention.

Luc’s eyes returned to Yesuph’s windows. “I’m unsure if I saw four or five people; however, I see no reason for all not to eat. They’ve been very predictable.”

“I saw the whore go in with the furniture refinisher,” Hull said.

Luc nodded. “Yes. She must sometimes stay with him.”

Luc pulled out the radio receiver and flicked it on. Still heavy metal wailing. Luc shut off the receiver.

Hull said, “Should we go check, search for the book?”

Luc pondered this. With all his heart he wanted them dead, so this chapter could end. So life could be somewhat normal, aside from preparation, until the glorious time came. He was certain now of their path. Since Cassandra’s near death he’d cast off the doubt that nagged at him for so long, that he and his father would be punished eternally if they and their ancestors had misconstrued Jehovah’s message.

“Let’s wait about ten minutes, make sure they’re dead.”

In the living room four men were lying dead amid the rank odor of vomit and feces.

Yesuph’s bedroom door swung open. Light from there spilled into the candlelit living room. Yesuph and Sonya, both dressed, stood in the doorway. Sonya stuffed bills in her purse while Yesuph tried for a last kiss and a grope. She let him as she closed her purse.

Wanting to reestablish peace in the apartment, Yesuph shut off Sonya’s CD player.

Sonya sniffed the air. “What’s that gross smell?” She took two steps from Yesuph’s bedroom, saw Eli on the living room floor, his face in a pool of vomit. She screamed like a banshee.

Across the hall, Hauser sat reading the newspaper. After today’s visit by those suspicious men he decided to keep Max’s .32 Ruger nearby, right now on the table beside him. He heard the music stop, enjoyed the silence, and briefly wondered why no tenant had complained. The silence lasted no longer than his thought. When Sonya screamed he grabbed the gun, jumped off his Lazy-Boy, ran out and pounded on Yesuph’s door.

__

Luc and Hull didn’t hear the scream because the receiver was in Luc’s backpack, but they had noticed that the dull thump of the music through the wall had quit.
